Tutorial: Transparency on Traditional scanned art.

Okay, so we’ve all had it once that we scanned something in and wanted to make it transparent. LIke, removing the white from a lineart on white paper. For this you can set the layer on multiply or even use masking techniques.
In my case, I’m doing a water-coloured webcomic, and I wanted to remove the white, without damaging the colours. So that I could overlap the picture onto another and the colours would blend.

I was before messing around with masking techniques, but I had problem with keeping the colours right. I’ve now found a technique that’s a bit more easy, and which allows me to draw this:

What you need:
*A picture(scanned in or otherwise)
*A computer with the gimp installed.

My version of the gimp is Dutch, so I’ll be putting the english name of the steps in bold.

City Park Breda

I was in the city park of Breda today, and I decided to have an attempt at painting the park.
It came out nice, though blurry(couldn’t work too long as the shadows kept shifting) and I sort of have the feeling that the colours aren’t quite right, but that’s to be expected.

Some Streets of Ganjet test page and brush inking tests.

I’ve been practicing brush inking, and I have the feeling I’m getting somewhere. I got some nice winsor and newton brushes and I’m still happily experimenting with them. I also made a test page for Streets of Ganjet, to see if brush inked characters on a penned background, coloured in, would look good.

Unforetunatly the page ended up a bit skewed and I think I’ll have to become good friends with my mirror once I start doing future pages.

A tryout with watercolour and masking techniques.

Sunny days always make me want to water-colour, so that’s what I did.

I borrowed a scanner from downstairs and scanned some water-colouring in, and edited it with masking techniques to get transparantcy in there.
Worked out pretty well.

Sora fanart

Little fanart of Sora from Kingdom Hearts, made in Painttool Sai.

Quite fun to do.

The character actually has more complicate clothing, but I attemted to simplify it. I think it worked out okay.

Kingdom Hearts and all it’s components are property of The Walt Disney Company and Square Enix. I do not make any money of it.

New mother nature design.

When we showed our story for the season changing puzzle game to our concept development lecturer, she suggested that we should make mother nature more native amarican, because the story is set in the west.
Again, this was done in inkscape. Generally, everyone seems to agree this Mother Nature looks better.

Production House: Season Project

Characters for our Production house product. The daughter, the hero, the villain and mother nature.

These images were made in vector in Inkscape, and are mostly conceptual pictures, but the final product will be made in flash.

New grass for stonesense

I mentioned Stonesense before. It’s a visualiser for Dwarf Fortress, an ascii simulation game I’m quite fond of.

Production house: Huey Hedgehog

For our production house we made a game called Huey Hedgehog. The project wasn’t a succes due to the majority of the team not having the skills neccesary. The project got a 6 due to the art being so great. Of course, I did all the art.

The teachers were quite strict on this poster. They didn’t like my first one, so I was told to go back and make some different designs. Then when I came back with some thumbnails they were estatic. Mostly because I was apparantly the only student who actually seemed to know what thumbnails were, but I regress. They were even more estatic about the final product. Pity that the game didn’t actually get finished.
